My husband and my kids were great - it was the rest of the family that were complete asses! Well, oddly, except for my Mother In Law. I seriously think I need a re-do of Mother's Day because yeah, I was robbed.
First, I've shared that we don't have the best relationship with my FIL's wife. She's fairly opposite of us in parenting. The fact she is still giving her kids an allowance at the ages of 21 & 22 while also paying for their apartments (yes 2 of them - one each kid) and I'm sure the rest of their expenses while they BOTH work and go to school, is a good indication of how different FG and I are. Because at their ages we were gettin' married. :) My parents paid for my school and helped me along but I didn't have my own apartment (I did get to live in the sorority house but that was so I could hold an office which was good "life experience" and it was only while school was in session). I had a part time job and I always took a full load of classes. I finished in 4 years with good grades, got 3 jobs, paid for half of our wedding and then was out on my own. So we find it R-I-D-I-C-U-L-O-U-S that FIL puts up with his wife paying so much for her kids.
Anyway, back to my crappy MD....
Sat. night we had FIL take our kids overnight. FIL's wife has been bugging us to pick a date to let them take the kids. It just so happened that we had an event to attend so that was a good night for it. Here's where I get annoyed and please, internet world, tell me if I'm over reacting. They said 1) they were going to the cabin at the lake and 2) they would have the kids back in the morning sometime, like mid-morning. I told them good because we wanted to go to an event at our river downtown.
Noon on Mother's Day, I call them to find out where my kids are because dammit, I want to leave and go to the event! They said morning, I figured at the lastest 11 am they would be home. They tell me they are just leaving the grocery store. Then they tell me that 1) they never left town to go to the lake 2) instead they took the kids to the event downtown yesterday!
That's where I'm furious. We have told them time & time again, if they change their plans to PLEASE JUST CALL US AND LET US KNOW WHERE OUR CHILDREN ARE. As their parents, don't we have a right to know where our kids are?! When we think they are one place and it turns out they are not there, it just does not sit well with me.
Then after they get home, DS tells me all that they did and how they had so much fun. Turns out they ate barely anything except SUGAR (ice cream 2x, two bags of candy, the most sugary cereal for breakfast...), they stayed up until
11:30 and got up at 8 blah blah blah. So for Mother's Day I got an awful feeling that I hate not knowing where my 8 & 4 year old are, that I have been somewhat decieved by members of my family that I trusted with my children and two very cranky and tired kids coming off a sugar rush. (I don't deny them sweets but my rule is they eat good food first which turns out that they are generally too full to eat an overabundance of crap). So I get that grandparents have a little lee-way with sweets and bedtimes but I feel that they went a bit over the top. The thing about FIL's wife is once she feels like she is doing
us a favor, she also feels she can disregard any of our parenting and do whatever
she wants with them. She also has this thing about doing fun things with them first if she can get to it. She's done it so many times and I have started to specify "Do not take them to see ____ movie because they have plans to go with _____ already." "Do not get them _____ because _____ is going to." "Do not take them to _____ because we are doing it next week." But I didn't do that this time because I didn't think I needed to when I
thought they were going the opposite direction to a different town!
Oh and to top it off, my dad stopped by just after the kids got home. I was mad, the kids were obviously not themselves and it was just bad timing all around. But my dad got his panties in a knot and huffed off leaving me standing in the driveway trying to get him to tell me what was wrong.
I went inside and cried. My whole day was just fucked up by everyone else.
We went to the downtown event but took the dog (FG's idea) so we ended up not being able to go over by the band w/ the live music or most of the cool tents to check out the "stuff". The kids were tired, hot and cranky so they just whined and complained. I finally said, "let's just go home!"
I made dinner. SMA came over. FG opened a nice bottle of wine just for me. I took something to help me sleep and went to bed.
